Our origin
The Curious Case of Lord Horatio Huxley
It’s hard to imagine Kensington without The Hux; the flamboyant hotel, yes, but more so the man whose legend built it.
But the site wasn’t always a place for decadent cocktails and velvet lounges. Long ago, it was a private residence, the extraordinary home of Lord Horatio Huxley.
Adventurer, collector, hedonist, Lord Huxley was many things and always an enigma. A naturalist with a flair for spectacle, he was famed for the wildly imaginative world he built behind the grand doors of his townhouse. It brimmed with towering tropical plants, exquisite art, rare curiosities from across the globe, and, of course, animals.
But not just any animals.
Lord Huxley adored the exotic, the enormous, and the utterly unexpected—creatures that astonished even the most travelled of his high-society guests. Naturally, they were allowed to roam freely throughout his home and taught the most wonderful things.
There were Russian black bears in silk smoking jackets who sipped sherry, never vodka, on principle. Lions who debated philosophy by the fireside, their golden manes flickering in the candlelight. Giraffes who developed a profound love of afternoon tea, always served in fine bone china or not at all. And rumour has it that the term ‘swinger’ originated from a monkey that seduced more than a couple of ladies while their partners were in the gentlemen’s room.
Each animal was part of Lord Huxley’s eccentric household, complete with its own character, charm and curious habits.
As for the man himself, Lord Huxley was known to indulge in pleasures best left to rumour. A well-connected figure in London’s most bourgeois circles, he hosted nights of extraordinary spectacle, eccentricity and delight. Events that lived on in whispers long after the candles had burned out.
Though long past, his spirit lingers in every velvet covering and in every oversized, swirled marble finial on the staircase. Lord Horatio Huxley’s legacy lives on.
We continue to honour what it means to be Huxy, in our eccentric, sometimes strange, but never boring style.
And we like to think Lord Huxley’s spirit still wanders these halls, raising his glass in support of our unapologetically indulgent haven, always ensuring that life remains delightfully unexpected
