Restless, always restless. The owls perched in Cambridgeshire, eyes raw from sleeplessness, wings twitching with the itch of Soho. Neighbours sneered, but Huxley adored their hunger, feeding it with champagne and lies, laughing  as   they   starved  on  fantasies. But hunger curdles. They grew gaunt, feathers patchy, eyes swollen red. They stared across the fields until even the dark began to stare back. It found them still whispering, throats cracked, wings unmoved when dawn came. London never saw them. Madness did. That was their scandal: to rot in longing, to gorge on dreams until nothing was left, and to prove that desire without courage is suicide in slow motion.

Cecil was no rug in waiting. He was a king with teeth polished by blood and patience. The American dentist came with bow, wife, and smugness, ready to hang his glory above a mantelpiece. Dawn broke, and Cecil charged. The tent ripped like cheap cloth. The hunter folded, trembling in his boots. His wife screamed until even silence trembled. Cecil did not kill cleanly; kings never do. He killed like theatre, each roar carrying like scandal across the plains, rattling cattle, shaking dust from old bones, leaving the horizon quaking at his rage. By morning, only bones and silence remained, the smell of vengeance heavy in the air. And the king, well, the king simply ate. His revenge was not quick, nor merciful, but it was complete. Cecil’s story is a reminder and a curse: crowns cannot be stolen, only feared. Kings may forget, but they never forgive. They feed on the bold, roaring until even dreams turn to nightmare.

Wolfgang believed himself untouchable, his lashes like theatre curtains and his long shaft meant for worship. He loved his long neck, and he strutted through Huxley’s estate like a prince, trailed by sighs and spilt wine, convinced that every glance was desire. Then came the zookeeper’s wife, sweet gin breath, stockings undone in hay. Their affair burned quickly and filthily. When Mad Shotgun Simon stormed home, Wolfgang bolted. But giraffe legs on a staircase are not comic, only catastrophic. Bone splintered. Blood painted the bannister, dripping to the tiles like spilt ink. Simon finished him with a smile, humming as he reloaded. Wolfgang’s body rotted in a ditch, but his vanity never left the house. Ask him now, and he would still say it was worth it. Because what is life without risk, and what is desire if it does not dangle above disaster? The staircase still creaks at night. Mistresses whisper they see him in mirrors, still preening, still beautiful, still certain the fall was worth it.

Raffa was chaos in fur. Quick hands, quicker grin, he turned Huxley’s townhouse into a jungle of broken rules. Trinkets, fruit, cufflinks, kisses, nothing stayed put for long. While the men smoked in velvet gloom, Raffa swung elsewhere. Lipstick smeared across his chest, perfume clung like trophies. Wives slipped back into the parlour, flushed, gowns crooked, eyes glassy. Regret was rare, gossip inevitable, and scandal rippled through the corridors like smoke, sweet and poisonous all at once. Swinger might as well have been coined for him. Huxley never banished his jester; every house needs its scandal. And Raffa never apologised. He laughed, swung, vanished. The chandeliers still sway, glass rattling faintly when no one moves. Raise your glass carefully, for Raffa is always near. Mischief was his delight, seduction his sport, scandal his game. And when the rope creaks above you, don’t bother praying, you’re already smiling.

Macaroni strutted like Mayfair in feathers. Tassels bouncing, he cut across Huxley’s ballroom with oysters dripping from his beak, champagne streaking his chest. He mocked dukes until they turned pale, shredded viscounts for sport, and once demanded a duel over a cracker he spat onto the floor in contempt. He lived for glare and perfume, the heat of chandeliers, the reek of excess, sweat, smoke, and rotting caviar. He was a comic drunk on land, a silk blade in water. Lovers drowned themselves gladly for him, mistaking cruelty for charm, mistaking ridicule for love. But Macaroni’s contempt was sharper than desire. He slit reputations with a glance, drove women to tears, men to rage, and left parties wilting when he turned away. The tassels gleam still, brittle with champagne long dried. If you see them flick, do not meet his eyes. He does not forgive the boring. He never did. And he’ll see it in you first, darling.

She was scandal in silk, forever late, forever loud, forever certain the spotlight belonged to her. One evening, after too many glasses of stolen rosé, she wobbled into Huxley’s garden, striking poses like the world was her stage, stumbling yet demanding applause. Guests laughed, ‘She thinks she is a panther, but only in pink.’ The joke stuck, the name stuck, and so did she. From that night on, she prowled every room, strutting with the seriousness of theatre, convinced she was a predator when she was only a spectacle. By dawn, the mascara ran, the feathers sagged, and her bow cracked into a croak. Champagne spilt on the lawn, laughter still ringing long after she stumbled off. Some adored her, some mocked her, but all remembered her. For the Pink Panther never slipped quietly away. She clawed until the end, desperate for attention and drunk on adoration. In her mind, it was triumph. To everyone else, it was comedy, and comedy lasts.

Colonel Coke was no gentleman. A veteran of the Battle of the Nile, he swaggered through Africa draped in medals, moustache curled sharper than his sabre. Victory made him arrogant, and arrogance made him cruel. In Sudan, he found his prize, a zebra striped like a regiment’s colours, too bold, proud, and visible to ignore. The animal strutted like the savannah was his parade ground, hooves striking like a drumroll in the heat, dust rising, gun oil thick in the air. Coke raised his glass and rifle, and with one puff of smoke, the stripes fell silent. But Coke’s triumph curdled into myth. The zebra’s death became his legacy, his punishment, his ghost. At The Hux, the old soldier lingers in the glass, every Old Fashioned tasting faintly of char and regret. He smoked the zebra, but in the end, Coke is remembered with bitterness, and every drink still tastes faintly of ash.

Pigelou never whispered. He shrieked. Lovers’ sighs, midnight confessions, drunken promises, all stolen, twisted, flung back with merciless clarity. He did not lie; that was the problem. He repeated truths no one wanted to hear. At Huxley’s table, he was adored and feared. A duchess swore she heard her husband’s betrayal in his cackle. A countess fainted when he mimicked her love making moans. Guests laughed too loudly, drank too quickly, and prayed their secrets were safe. They never were. He drank rum, tore jewels from necklines, spat scandal with feathers raised. By dawn, friendships soured, marriages cracked, reputations lay in tatters. Still, he screeched, drunk on the power of revelation. Pigelou left silence stripped bare, no corner of the night untouched by his echo. Even now, if you listen, you may hear him in the rafters, shrieking laughter, tearing through the velvet hush with truths you hoped would never be spoken.

Patrick never belonged with the men. They smoked, boasted, and spat politics. He preened. Every feather was arranged until it burned like stained glass. He had no interest in horses, guns, or conquest. His conquest was subtler, eyes caught, hearts unsettled. He drifted through the ballroom, hips swaying, his smile sharp as a blade. The women whispered that he was prettier than they were. The men muttered, “Disgrace,” and turned away. He only laughed, a high note that cut through the music like glass. He was never touched, never claimed. He lived on glances, the ache of envy, the sting of desire denied. What he wanted was not love but worship, cruel and unending. Adored but never desired, envied but never held, Patrick’s tragedy glittered as bright as his feathers. And still he strutted, because silence was worse than scorn, and the echo of applause was the only warmth he ever knew.

She never asked for the name. Butch was spat at her after a beakfight in the orchard, and it stuck like blood on a feather. She tried to beat it out of mouths, but every swing only hammered it deeper. Soon, even the House staff whispered it. She cursed louder, drank harder, and fought anyone who dared grin. Yet beneath the armour, something ached. She longed to shimmer like Pigelou, strut like Patrick, and be seen as beautiful without claws to defend it. But mirrors mocked her. Where others gleamed, she blazed. So she leaned in. She kissed like a strike, spat at the name and wore it like a crown. Butch became her scar, her shield, her legend. Call her it tonight, and watch. She will glare, curse, maybe even strike. But she will answer to it, because in the end, she cannot escape it. Butch is her wound, and her glory.
